Go Green: Energy Saving Tips

Energy Saving Tips

Almost all homeowners are concerned about saving energy (and money). Here are a few tips to help you save more on your energy bills.

Replace light bulbs with CFLs (compact fluorescent bulbs).

They use less energy, which means less money spent on electricity. CFLs also last up to 5 years! Many energy companies have rebate programs for CFLs. Check with your local power company to see if they offer rebates.

Get your furnace tuned-up annually.

Service checks are important for safety, efficiency, and ensuring that your furnace lasts longer.

Upgrade your furnace filter

And get into the habit of changing it regularly, especially in the winter months. Your home’s air quality and energy efficiency depend on how clean your filters are.

Install a programmable thermostat.

Doing so can save up to 31% on heating and cooling costs, depending on your heating system and how well insulated your home is. In the winter, set your thermostat so that your home is cooler during the day (when no one is at home) and at night (when everyone in your home is snug in bed). When the weather warms up, set your temperatures higher during the day.

Caulk your windows.

Small leaks from cracks around doors and windows can let as much heat escape from your home as an open window does. Seal up those spaces and save. If you’re hesitant to apply caulking for fear that it may interfere with your home’s appearance, invest in removable caulking. It’ll get the job done, but can be easily peeled off when you need to open your windows in the spring/summer.

Add weather stripping to the exterior doors of your home.

Weather stripping can be found at almost all hardware stores or in the home centers of large department stores. Like caulking, it’s a simple, affordable solution to air leaks.

When it’s time to invest in a new water heater, opt for a tankless design.

Tankless water heaters only work when they need to. They don’t use energy keeping a big tank of water hot when you’re not using it. They do have a higher initial cost than conventional models but the long-term savings are huge.
