6 Ways to Keep Fall Pests Out of Your Home

As the season changes to Fall, the weather cools down and gives us relief from the hot summer. Fall Pests and rodents are looking for a warm place with food and shelter and your home or business may be the target.

Here are 6 things you can do at home to prevent fall pests from becoming part of the family this season.

1. Seal cracks and crevices.

Using caulk and/or steel wool, seal any openings around your home, especially around utility pipes.

2. Keep food and trash concealed.

Making food and trash available to pests and rodents gives them steady food supply. Keep leftover food, even dog food, in air tight sealed containers. Don’t give them an all you can eat buffet in your pantry. Also, make it a habit to take the trash out every night. This will keep the pests outside and not follow their noses into your kitchen for a midnight snack; next thing you know they will never leave.

3. Close any openings around your home.

Attic and crawl space vents should be properly screened, as well as chimney openings. This is a common entry point for wildlife and pest nuisances, like squirrels and mice.

4. Eliminate moisture.

Another tip we add for you is to do everything possible to limit the amount of moisture in your house. Pests love moisture and fall brings the rain. In basement areas, you can run fans or even dehumidifiers to remove as much of the moisture as possible. Don’t let your house become cozy to pests! Pests need water to survive just like people do. Correct leaking pipes and clogged drains to avoid excess areas of moisture, which will attract pests.

5. Eliminate entry points around doors and windows.

Install door sweeps on any exterior doors to close any gaps for pests to come through. Repair damaged screens or replace missing ones. This creates an extra barrier around windows to help keep pests out.

6. Keep wood and debris away from your home’s exterior.

Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery well trimmed to eliminate potential hiding spots for pests and wildlife.
